International Small Business Study
A collaborative project to understand and help small businesses dealing with the COVID-19 crisis.
Project Objectives
- Gather information on how the current COVID-19 public health crisis is affecting small and medium sized businesses and how government relief packages being implemented in the region can help.
- Document the perceptions of business owners regarding what government policies are currently available to them and which ones are most needed.
- Determine the best ways to increase awareness and disseminate information regarding the relief that is available to small and medium sized businesses.

Small Business Voices
We do therapy for children with Autism. Because of Covid 19, we've lost 50% of our clients. All
employees have been laid off.
AnnMarie’s Bridal &Tuxedo Shoppe has been providing bridal formal & eventwear since 1995. I am the
only employee in my store [..] I had 3 brides call to tell me their wedding have been postponed, 7
proms have been cancelled and the list goes on.
I'm in Vegas, I have a guitar repair/restoration business. So no tourist, no shows, all musicians out of work so that translates into no income for me!
Our family and I own and operate with some part time help a family entertainment facility - playground, bouncy houses, splash pad and petting zoo. (...) My understanding of the Covid-19
business assistance programs is that they are not designed to help family businesses without regular
employees. We are down to our last few hundred dollars in reserves and will then be unable to feed
our livestock or pay mortgages. Due to travel restrictions we are not even able to rehome the
animals if we could find them homes. We will not be able to recover if we don’t receive IMMEDIATE
financial assistance and frankly can’t find the will to try if we lose our animals and the property
that has been in our family for generations.
We need to get a clear testing protocol in place. We need clear guidelines for wearing masks in public. We will need economical stimulus to make sure rent and payroll is getting paid. We need to make sure the supply chain is strong, which will rely on testing protocols.
As we can not operate at all, we need help extending our debts to a time that we can resume normal operation. In addition to longer term financing, we need short term reprieve on our current operating expenses and possibly tax abatements.
Remove the qualification on the PPP application that bars business owners who have defaulted on their students loans from receiving funding.
Rescue us! Grants! Loans are fine but to still make 3.75 interest on us is still too high.
